Amid Virus, California Moved Slowly on Nursing Student Rules

It took California nearly a month after declaring a state of emergency to change rules allowing thousands of nursing students to graduate so they can help fight the coronavirus.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Fearing an out-of-control coronavirus outbreak would overwhelm California’s health care system, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a statewide emergency on March 4. Within a week dozens of nursing schools pleaded with the state regulators to immediately allow thousands of their students to more quickly complete their education and get to work.
