In the face of an uncertain job market, higher expenses because of inflation and fewer entry-level opportunities, Americans are increasingly turning to trade schools instead of pursuing a four-year degree.
Between Spring 2021 and Spring 2026, enrollment in “high vocational schools” increased by nearly 38%, according to recent data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center. By comparison, traditional four-year colleges saw enrollment figures rise by just 3% during the same period.
While the actual number of Americans enrolled in high vocational schools, or trade schools, is still quite low compared with those enrolled in four-year institutions, there is no denying that there has been significant growth in the popularity of this pathway over the past five years.
