Unitek College graduates 22 new nurses as Central Valley shortage strains hospitals

Six years after the COVID-19 pandemic began, health care leaders say the nursing shortage continues to put pressure on hospitals and health care systems across the country, including here in the Central Valley.

Health care leaders estimate more than 200,000 nurses nationwide have left the profession since the pandemic, creating a significant gap in the health care workforce.

The students from Unitek College celebrated their graduation at the Veterans Memorial Building, marking the transition from the classroom to the hospital room.

“Nursing is a very difficult, challenging career, but it is very rewarding, very fulfilling,” said Juan Mendoza, one of the graduating nursing students.
