Bill would improve oversight over for-profit college industry
Washington — Congressman Jeff Jackson introduced the Proprietary Education Oversight Task Force Act to improve oversight over for-profit colleges and universities.
The Proprietary Education Oversight Task Force Act creates an interagency committee that enhances coordination of federal oversight for for-profit colleges, protecting students from scams and excessive debt.
The bill mandates the committee to issue yearly reports on enforcement actions against these institutions and to release a For-Profit College Warning List to aid prospective students in making educated choices on where they should get their degree.
“For-profit colleges can prey on our veterans and low-income students, saddling them with crushing debt and, oftentimes, no degree,” said Rep. Jackson. “We need to ensure that this industry has the necessary oversight to protect students from scams and ensure higher education programs help, not hurt, their students’ future endeavors.”
Rep. Jackson was joined by seven original co-sponsors: Reps. Alma Adams, Rosa DeLauro, Maxine Waters, Adam Schiff, Suzanne Bonamici, Pramila Jayapal, and Jamaal Bowman.
